Our Story

About Us

Hearts Across the Ocean is a non-profit charity organization lovingly dedicated to saving lives in India's poorest communities. India is facing an unprecedented epidemic of cardiovascular disease. Projections from the Indian Council of Medical Research indicate that India will be the home for more cardiovascular patients than any other country by the year 2005. Though the average cost for a life-saving operation is only about $2,500 USD, the extreme poverty in India prevents many parents from affording this kind of heathcare. The money raised by Hearts Across the Ocean goes directly to the medical institutions in India that can perform the necessary surgery. It is our hope that as you learn about the severity of the problem and get to know some of the fortunate children who have already received care, that you will find it in you heart to make a donation or even volunteer to organize your own fundraising event.

Here are other children whose lives were saved with operations payed for by Hearts Across the Ocean.

Read their stories to understand what a difference a few selfless volunteers can make.

Vincent Vincent is the second child to receive a life-saving operation paid for by donations to Hearts Across the Ocean
Haridas Daughter of Haridas. Saved by our fourth operation.

This little boy has been through quite a bit until his heart was fixed here at AIMS. Aromal's father is a manual laborer and they have very little means.  Aromal has a large hole between the lower chambers of the hear.  This hole is known as ventricular spetal defect or VSD.  This hole diverts much of the blood pumped out of the heart to his lungs.  As a result the lungs are flooded.  Aromal was unwell since the age of 2 months and was unable to feed adequately.  He had several bouts of pneumonia.  The most recent episode of pneumonia was very severe and he had to be mechanically ventilated.  Thanks to the financial assistance received, Aromal could be operated and his hole was closed by Dr. Shivaprakasha. Although he was very sick when he was taken up for surgery, he has done really well and can now look forward to a normal future

This young schoolgirl  is Arthira. She had a hole in the upper chambers of her heart called an atrial septal defect or ASD. The surgery was done from the back, a cosmetic approach.

This eight-month old baby girl named Binisha comes from a poor family in a small village in Kerala; she was diagnosed with a complex congenital heart ailment. Here she is some weeks after her surgery.

This 28-days-old-baby, the daughter of Shiny,  has not been given a name yet, as is the tradition in this part  of India. She had a very serous heart disease known as transposition, and as a result had very little oxygen in her blood. She underwent an operation called an arterial switch procedure and has now been cured.

Shylaja is 2 years old but only weighs 15.5 lbs because a large hole in her heart did not allow her to grow like a normal child. She underwent a successful surgery and is getting ready to go home.

Sreekutty had two problems: a large hole in her heart known as a ventricular septal defect, and narrowing of  the pathway from her heart to the her lungs. As a result, her skin was blue and she tiered easily and was unable to play. She underwent operations for both problems and is getting ready to go home.

Philip, age 7: "I gave all my saved allowance, $100.00, because my mom told me that someone in Indian was very sick and needed a new heart to live. I realized that this was more important than me wanting a new Playstation game from Toys R Us"

Anyone can help. Here we see Sam and Skyla selling flowers for Hearts at a street fair. To see some of our recent fund-raising activities, click here.
Fr. Steven Rozzelle: "The kids learn more about God by doing this than anything they could teach them in Sunday school… I don't care what the children learn on Sunday, I want to know if they share their toys on Monday"
Jeffrey, 11 years old: "Well you are saving some little dudes' life, and it is really cool."
Gregory age 8 (upon seeing that the photo of the boy his group whose operation his group helped sponsor): "It make you feel good inside because he would die without it"
